UK & LATAC Clean Growth Academy: Scale your impact beyond borders

In partnership with the British Embassy in Bogota and the UK Department for International Trade in Latin America & the Caribbean, CleantechHUB Colombia is launching the “UK & LATAC Clean Growth Academy”. The programme is focused on sourcing and supporting Latin American and Caribbean Cleantech Champions ready to scale their impact beyond borders, supporting them in leveraging access to the UK market, ecosystem and resources.

We are calling out to all ecosystem actors and all sustainable entrepreneurs & Cleantech innovators in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in Colombia, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile, that have an interest in expanding to the UK and international markets to apply for the first cohort of this new programme. Applications can be done via this link. The deadline is October 24.

We are facing the largest climate challenge in human history. The recently released IPCC report provides new estimates of the chances of crossing the global warming level of 1.5°C in the next decades, and finds that unless there are immediate, rapid and large-scale reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, limiting warming to close to 1.5°C or even 2°C will be beyond reach. Continuing to work through incremental changes will not be enough. We need thousands of innovations and we need them fast.

“Cleantech will be a key player in the future growth of our global development. I am delighted that ahead of COP26 in Glasgow later this year, that the UK Government is promoting this exciting initiative that will support leading cleantech scaleups from LATAC to go global and benefit environments and economies around the world – using the UK ecosystem to do so.”

— Jonathan Knott, Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner for Latin America and the Caribbean

The curriculum, as follows, is developed in English, however the training and mentoring can also be presented in Spanish.Informational Webinar
(October 19): 50+ participants will be invited to participate in a webinar to learn more about how they will benefit from our programme.

Selection
(October 27): After reviewing the submissions to our application form, responses will be evaluated to select our top contenders. This stage is about understanding more about the scaleups, their team, company, ambitions, investment journey, and dedication to breaking into the UK market.

Clean Growth Academy
(November): 10 Cleantech Champions from the Latin America and the Caribbean region will be selected to participate in the Academy that will consist of cutting edge workshops on international scale with leading curriculum provided by our partners at EIT Climate KIC, EU Tech, Allia Cambridge and the UK Department of International Trade. Interviews may be conducted at this stage.

Finalist
The winner(s) of the Academy will receive a soft landing and a week full of training, networking and matchmaking to explore UK-market opportunities and look for partners to scale their business beyond borders.  Depending on safety guidelines, this may be conducted virtually. Possible follow-ups include a VIP webinar, COP26, and aligning with possible other local and regional programs within the Embassy.

This will be accompanied by tailor-made guidance, market intelligence and matchmaking support to the UK market by the respective British Embassies in the region, which could include:

  • Connections with potential customers, innovators, suppliers and partners within the UK, the fifth largest economy globally and a gateway to Europe and the rest of the world.
  • Vision of the UK market and ecosystem: an established, business-friendly environment, with economic stability and commercial security, all of which continues to attract the very best talent internationally.
  • Comprehensive regional and global analysis to help overseas companies choose the right place to set up with the help of introductions to the Cleantech sector networks, industry leaders, chambers of commerce, service providers, universities and centres of R&D excellence.
  • Explanation of the tax environment in the UK, on-going government support, and support with applying for visas and entry to the UK.

Entrepreneurs are proven innovators, job creators and instigators of change that bring forth new technologies and disruptive approaches to industry. Alongside early stage investors and partners that are willing to support the scaling of these new technologies, the challenge of reaching a net zero future is surmountable.

We can only rise to the challenges of the climate crisis by working together!
